The Story Behind Phil Mickelson’s New Prototype Putter Insert

Tony Toulon

Austie Rollinson, Chief Designer for Odyssey Golf, is no stranger to unique requests from our TOUR players. And Phil Mickelson is no exception. The 5-time-major winner ran into Austie at Callaway HQ back in September and got a sneak peek of a prototype insert.

Always a tinkerer, Phil was immediately intrigued, and Austie and the team built up three #9s with the prototype insert technology for him to test that same day here in Carlsbad.  Phil, a Rancho Santa Fe resident who lives just 15 minutes from Callaway HQ, couldn’t wait and actually drove over himself to pick up his new putters that afternoon. He put the new insert in play immediately at the Ryder Cup (remember his unreal 10 birdie performance in singles?) and helped the U.S. team win convincingly.

Austin was kind enough to share a screenshot of the text exchange the two shared in regards to Phil’s new insert (much more on that Monday)…
